Sheila M. Finlayson

Educational Experience

A native of Annapolis, Sheila grew up in an area called Eastport and graduated from Annapolis Senior High School.  After high school, she attended Morgan State College (University now) where she majored in English. 

Sheila earned her Master of Arts, in Cultural Foundations of Education, at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. 

Sheila has taken a variety of courses including Human Resources Development, Campaign Management and Negotiating Using Interest Based Bargaining.

Sheila, a member of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools for 32 years, began her career as a junior high school English and reading teacher at Marley Junior H. S. in Glen Burnie. After being excessed at the end of her first year, she moved on to Bates Junior High in Annapolis. After two years, the principal of Bates, Martin J. Eichhorn was named principal of the new South River High School. Mr. Eichhorn asked Sheila to join the faculty. She gladly took the challenge and moved on to the new high school where she taught a variety of English classes, most notably British Literature and Speech.

Sheila sponsored numerous classes, beginning with the first class to attend the new school in four years, the Class of 1981. She also coached the cheerleaders and sponsored the yearbook.

Sheila was known as the “Queen of Field Trips” as she enjoyed exposing students to learning opportunities outside of the classroom. Their travels reached from the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. to Medieval Times in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, and to New York City.

After twenty five years at South River, Sheila left to take the full time position as President of the Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County.
